## It Depends (But Here's How to Decide)

I train clients one-on-one and I coach group classes at Green Door Fitness. I've been doing both for years. People ask me all the time which one is "better," and the answer is always: it depends on you.

I'm Tim, a NASM-certified trainer in Denver, and here's my honest breakdown.

### One-on-One Training: The Pros

**Everything is built around you.** Your program, your pace, your goals. If you have a shoulder issue, we work around it. If you want to focus on deadlifts, we focus on deadlifts. There's no compromise with 15 other people's needs.

**Form correction happens in real time.** When I'm training one person, I'm watching every rep. I catch problems before they become injuries. In a group class of 12 people, I can't watch everyone's squat depth on every single rep.

**Faster results.** This isn't debatable. When your entire program is designed for your specific body, your specific weaknesses, and your specific goals, you progress faster. A 2019 study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that individualized programming produced 30-40% greater strength gains compared to generalized group training.

**Accountability is personal.** When a trainer knows your name, your program, and your schedule, it's harder to skip sessions. You're not just a face in a class. Someone notices when you don't show up.

### One-on-One Training: The Cons

**It costs more.** A dedicated trainer's full attention for an hour is more expensive than splitting a class among a group. At most Denver gyms, personal training runs $80-$150 per session.

**It can feel intense.** There's nowhere to hide. Every rep counts, and your trainer is watching all of them. For some people, that's motivating. For others, it's stressful at first.

### Group Fitness: The Pros

**The energy is real.** There's something about training in a room full of people pushing hard. The music, the competitive edge, the collective effort. It pulls performance out of you that you might not generate on your own.

**Built-in community.** You see the same faces every Tuesday and Thursday at 6am. You start saying hi, then exchanging names, then grabbing coffee after class. For people who thrive on social connection, group fitness delivers that.

**More variety.** Most gyms rotate through different class formats: spin, HIIT, rowing, yoga, strength circuits. You're less likely to get bored compared to a standard strength training program.

**Lower per-session cost.** Group classes are almost always included in a gym membership, so the marginal cost per class is close to zero.

### Group Fitness: The Cons

**The program isn't yours.** Everyone in the class does the same workout. If you need more hamstring work and less chest work, too bad. The class is what it is.

**Limited form correction.** A good instructor will cue the room and correct what they can see. But with 10-20 people moving at once, individual attention is limited.

**Scheduling constraints.** Classes run at set times. If you can only train at 3pm and the class is at 5:30pm, you're out of luck.

### The Green Door Approach

At Green Door Fitness, we don't force you to pick one or the other. Our membership includes both:

- **Coach-on-floor every visit.** When you come in for a strength session, a trainer is on the floor to guide your individual program. That's closer to one-on-one training than a typical gym experience.
- **Group classes** like Ride & Row, Super Spin, and strength circuits for the days you want that group energy.

A lot of our members do 2-3 coached strength sessions and 1-2 group classes per week. That combination covers everything: personalized progression, form correction, variety, and community.

### So Which Should You Choose?

**Pick one-on-one if:**

- You're new to strength training and need proper form foundations
- You have specific goals (lose 20 lbs, squat 200 lbs, rehab an injury)
- You work better with individual attention and accountability
- Your schedule is unpredictable and you need flexibility

**Pick group classes if:**

- You're motivated by social energy and competition
- You already have a strength base and want cardio/conditioning variety
- You like structure and showing up at a set time
- You want to meet people at the gym

**Do both if:**

- You want the best of both worlds (this is what most of our members end up doing)

We're running a Back-to-School 10-Pack right now: 10 one-on-one sessions for $799, new clients only. If you've been doing group classes and want to try dedicated personal training, or if you're totally new and want that individualized start, it's a good entry point.
